Darwinism

Before Darwin

The lives of the naturalist Georges Cuvier, the father of comparative anatomy, and of the philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel shared several similarities. Contemporaries, both men were born and died almost at the exact same time, they enjoyed mutual friends, were subjects of the same state of the old regime (Württemberg), and suffered from unpopularity for reasons often having nothing at all to do with science. These coincidences and their common battle with the German school of Naturphilosophie, convinced me to construct an intertwined biography of both men, recovering the old structure of parallel lives.

The complete works of Darwin online

Cambridge University, an institution that has the largest collection of documents on Darwin, has decided to make available all their material on the Internet, thus offering the chance to meet Darwin as a whole and in all the senses: for everything that he himself wrote and for what others wrote about him. Without doubt, an ideal collection for fans of Darwin and evolution.

Alois M. Haas, mystical and Germanist at the University of Zurich

"Mysticism educates the human being in the experience of distance"

His investiture as Doctor Honorius Cause at the University Pompeu Fabra of Barcelona (UPF) not only does justice to his career but also to the generous donation Haas has made to the Catalan university: 40,000 volumes of his particular library, amongst which unique pieces, jewels of incalculable bibliographical value are included. Last December, Josep Joan Moreso (rector at the UPF), Victoria Cirlot and Amador Vega (professors at the Humanity Department) were the ones in charge by the university of paying tribute to this professor emeritus from the University of Zurich, world opinion leader in the field of mysticism, theology and history of religions.

Hounds of human existence

Book

Only poetry could give the flagship Darwin travelled in the peculiar name of a hound. Aboard the Beagle, the father of evolution did not embark on any fox hunting, but to trace the origins of man and questioned the religious views of Creation, previously taken care of by scientists...

Darwin, faith and fanciful theories

Evolutionism: the decline of a hypothesis. Is the surprising headline of a book published a few weeks ago. The publication includes the proceedings of the pro creationism agreement organized strictly behind closed doors, last February, in the classrooms of the Italian National Research Council (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, CNR).

A study contradicts the hypothesis of 'first the metabolism'

A research published in 'Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences' rejects the theory that the origin of life originated as a system of autocatalytic molecules capable of experimenting Darwinian evolution without the need of replicating RNA or DNA. According to the study, then, life as a system capable of experimenting Darwinian evolution began when it was able to store genetic information and transmit it as it happens with RNA and DNA.

"Darwin compared Jenny's gestures, 'his’ favourite orang-outang, with his children's attitudes"

Randall Hume Keynes, Darwin's great grandson

Credited as an author, Scandinavian philologist (he studied with Tolkien's son), writer and environmentalist, Sir Randall is, above all, familiar. Because he descends from two 'sacred' lineages in the United Kingdom: the one from the naturalist Charles Darwin and from the economist John Maynard Keynes (author from ‘general theory of employment, interest and money’, bible of capitalism); and also, because he uses a very warm and intimate tone in his conversations. We interviewed him in Alexandria (Egypt), where he assisted an international summit on Darwin's legacy, organized by the British Council.

Charles Darwin, portrait of an honest scientist who defied science and religion

“We are living in a sad time! It is easier to disintegrate an atom than a prejudice” says the famous phrase of Albert Einstein. This thought also inspires the pages of the book “Darwin and the monkey”, a volume that reviews myths and facts of the famous naturalist born 200 years ago in Shrewsbury (United Kingdom). The book is signed by Daniel Turbón, Professor of the Department of Animal Biology at the University of Barcelona and Carlos Alberto Marmelada, professor of the International University of Catalonia, and is published by Ediciones Sello.

From them we learnt to look at the sky

Conference

The Mediterranean has acted as a melting pot of circulating ideas and people since the origins of humanity. During the Middle Ages, when Europe lived plunged into opacities towards knowledge, the Arabs of East (Mashriq) and those from the West (Maghreb) instituted themselves in "belts" of science and cultures of well diverse origins.
