More coal – we want water!

The Museu Agbar proposes for Saturday, July 3 at 22:00, a theatrical tour in which the architect Josep Amargós i Samaranch, along with one of the boilermen and one of the engineers responsible for the steam engines at the Central Cornellà de Aguas of Barcelona, will explain the origin of this water extraction and pumping plant, which began operating in 1909.

Film and psychoanalysis were almost born in agreement with one another. The nineteenth century was drawing to a close. Whilst in Vienna Sigmund Freud and Josef Breuers were engaged in publishing a study on hysteria, inventors Louis and Auguste Lumière were making history in the darkness of the Salon Indien of the Grand Café in Paris projecting the first scene ever filmed in cinema: workers leaving the Lumière factory in Lyon Monplaisir.

Science Festival 2010 in Barcelona’s Parc de la Ciutadella

What would you like to know about biodiversity, robots, the origin of the cosmos, the applications of mathematics or the latest technological developments? You will find these and other topics explained in depth at Barcelona’s Science Festival 2010 on June 12 and 13 in the Parc de la Ciutadella. More than 60 activities, from workshops and demonstrations to virtual games, talks, walks, installations and performances, will try to answer questions such as why a blue laser can pop a yellow balloon but cannot burst a blue one; why particles have mass; what dark matter is; what allows us to see polarized light; or why we do not see green stars.

Talència announces the Poster Contest for Science Week 2010

Talència, the new institution for the promotion and recognition of research in Catalonia, an initiative launched by the Department for Innovation, Universities and Business of the Generalitat de Catalonia, is holding a Poster Contest for the 15th Science Week in Catalonia 2010 (SC’10), which will take place from November 12 to 22. The winning poster will represent the image of SC'10 and will be awarded with €1,000. For this year’s contest, the poster should celebrate biodiversity and multiculturalism, thereby bringing together two distinctions for 2010 - the International Year of Biodiversity and the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures.

Conference on Science Communication 2.0 held at the University of Girona

The second edition of the Conference on Scientific Communication 2.0, organized by the Department of Scientific Culture and Digital Communication of the University of Girona, will get under way on May 21 at 15:30 in the university’s Science and Technology Park.
