Today’s electric car will very likely end up being nothing more than a link between vehicles with a combustion engine and those vehicles which in a relatively few years should populate the streets and highways of the world. A team of researchers from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), the Telecommunications Technological Center of Catalonia (CTTC) and the company WorldSensing has designed a sensor system capable of locating empty spaces and informing the user.

For the past few weeks, the tollbooth at the Vallvidrera tunnel in Spain’s northern Catalonia region has been awarding a 20% discount to vehicles carrying at least three passengers. And nobody is counting. The work is done by an automatic computer vision system designed at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia.
