Challenge 2030?

Deciphering the language of bats

Bats are capable of emitting ultrasounds that serve to navigate and catch insects in flight, an ability known as echolocation. Now, a team of German and Austrian scientists has found that bats also use ultrasound to recognize one other, just as people do with voices.

Discovery of a new strategy of a bird to sexually attract its partner

Drawing the attention of a female in large cereal plains and steppes is no easy task. A study led by the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) concludes that the male bustard ('Otis tarda') exposes during his colourful courtships the back part of their tails raised towards the sun, so that it falls on the white plumage and makes it brighter and visible to the females. The work has been published in the journal 'Behavioural Ecology and Sociobiology'.
