UdL publishes a guide for making educational documents accessible to student with disabilities

With the objective of adapting university education to the needs of people with disabilities, the University of Lleida (UdL), through its unit specifically designed for these students, UdLxTothom, and the Research Group of Human-Computer Interaction and Data Integration (GRIHO) has published a guide for teachers to improve access to educational materials, whether printed, web or multimedia presentations for disabled students.

The Guide of accessible digital contents has been presented by the rector, Joan Viñas, the Vice Chancellor of Student, Xavier Gómez, and the respective heads of UdLxTothom and GRIHO Group, Jordi Coiduras and Toni Granollers. A 3.0 Creative Commons license allows the reproduction, distribution and public communication of the documents, provided that the author is acknowledged and there is not a commercial use.

This guide explains step-by-step, how to structure, format and write a paper made with Microsoft Word, OpenOffice Writer or Microsoft PowePoint so that the information is  operable and understandable also for people with severe visual and mobility disabilities. It describes how to convert PDF documents so they maintain their properties of accessibility as well as how to consider this aspect when introducing content on the web. Among other things, it explains how to change the font size or use a voice synthesizer that reads the text.
 
UdL through UdLxTothom Unit, has been working since 2006 to address the specific educational needs of students with disabilities. The removal of physical barriers in all its campuses, the implementation of personal and technological aid, the purchase of specific equipment or adaptation of elements of virtual platforms. This academic year about forty students with disabilities are enrolled at the UL.
