A virtual changing room to “try on” clothes

Online shopping is already a common practice for many people. First it was airplane and train tickets, later, perfumes and electronics, and now clothes. But how to bridge the gap between the Internet and our room when trying on a piece of clothing? AITech has been working on this question and has presented a prototype developed with the British company C-Instore for the multinational CBS.

22 june 2010

The Westfield shopping mall in London was the site chosen by the multinational advertising firm CBS Outdoor to install the first virtual changing room with technology  designed by AITech. The company PRUAB was commissioned by CBS to promote the World Cup in South Africa by designing computer vision software that can recognize the human figure and superimpose a football jersey chosen by the user on its frame.

This phenomenon is called augmented reality, a sub-sector of information and communication technology with great development prospects.
Using a high-definition camera, a touchscreen and software developed by AITech and C-Instore, the device detects movements and patterns in real time and adapts the garment to the body. The resulting image is displayed and can be frozen at will to produce a picture.

Although this first prototype is designed for installation in LCD panels in shopping malls for the campaign of the World Cup, the intention is to develop this software and to refine it for wider use in the not-too-distant future. The aim would be to try on clothes at home, online, and even to seek advice from friends and family via Facebook or other social networks.
