The Strategy for the Regional Innovation System for Central Catalonia is unveiled

Catalonia’s Councilor for Innovation, Universities and Enterprise Josep Huguet, accompanied by the Director of the Department of Regional Services for Central Catalonia Josep Palau, recently presented in Manresa the proposed Strategy for the Regional Innovation System in Central Catalonia. Speaking to the economic and social entities in the area, Huguet explained how the strategy examines the innovation system of the five counties that make up Central Catalonia as well as the opportunities and challenges in this field.

This project, which is the result of collaboration between key actors in the innovation system and the territorial government, is part of Catalonia’s National Pact for Research and Innovation (PNRI), the Research and Innovation Plan 2010-2013 (PRI) and the Strategic Plan of ACCIÓ 2010-2013.

The Strategy for the Regional Innovation System in Central Catalonia represents the PNRI’s deployment in Central Catalonia. The PNRI contains guidelines that should serve as the premise for the elaboration of a regional strategy along with plans adapted to each country that analyze the particularities of each one, pinpointing needs and opportunities.

Focusing on R+D challenges

The eighth goal of the PRI 2010-2013 is to contribute to the differentiation of territories according to their ability to address complex socio-economic challenges and the execution of R+D policies. In this sense, the PRI foresees that the efforts and investments of the Catalan government through the PRI in R+D (€227 million over four years) are concentrated in territories specialized in an individual focus.

Given the prior experiences in Catalonia and international references, the PRI 2010-2013 identifies three areas in relation to the territorial definition of political strategies and support of R+D: “Regions of Knowledge,” “Innovative Cities and Regions” and “Zones of Rural Innovation,” for which proper interactions are needed to align these three overlapping areas so that agents of research and innovation, professionals, entrepreneurs and innovators do not suffer lapses in coordination. The PRI organizes Catalonia into seven regions of knowledge, one of which is Central Catalonia.
