How many people are in space?

The website “How many people are in space right now?” shows how many astronauts are currently in outer space. It is an interesting bit of real-time trivia as we approach the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s historic space flight

Fifty years ago, the former Soviet Union sent the first man into space, Iuri Aleksèievitx Gagarin, and since then excursions beyond Earth's atmosphere have never ceased. At the time of writing this sentence, the website How many people are in space right now? indicates that nine astronauts are currently in orbit, all aboard the International Space Station.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Gagarin's historic space flight, which took place on April 12, 1961, the film First Orbit (available on line) has been made in collaboration with the astronauts aboard the International Space Station. It shows a new vision of what Gagarin must have seen as he traveled around our planet. The images are accompanied by a recording of the words of the Russian astronaut as he made history.
