Recently, there have been a peppering of stories in the press about manned mission to Mars if, that is, we pay attention to the announcements of space agencies. But they are make-believe, simulated experiments on Earth, and the plans and statements of space officials are just that, statements of intent. There is still an absence of what is actually needed in order to launch interplanetary journeys within a reasonable timeframe: a lot of money, a political commitment and an ambitious and well-articulated plan.
