Although the Macael marble quarries in Spain’s southern Almería province have operated since the time of the Phoenicians, they have had to innovate just like any traditional sector that wishes to remain in the market. They mostly disappear by the end of their funding, according to a report from the European auditors court. The result means bad news for this instrument of science policy, now that Europe is preparing for a new R&D stage in a renewed policy framework.
