Barcelona International Environmental Film Festival

Today, June 1, at 21:30 the 17th edition of Barcelona International Environmental Film Festival (FICMA) gets under way at Cines Alexandra. This year, for the first time, programming will also be available on the website of the festival, which lasts until June 6.

1 june 2010

The festival will open with the premiere of “The Cove,” a stunning film that leaves no one indifferent. Awarded the 2010 Oscar for Best Documentary, among a long list of accolades, this documentary demonstrates the greed and crime to which dolphins (one of the most intelligent and most admired animals across the world) are routinely subjected in the bay of a small Japanese town, which apparently is characterized by its devotion to these animals, but in reality hides a dark secret.

“The Cove” will be followed by a procession of some of the most interesting and recent  productions concerning the environment. For example, the festival will also serve as the European  premier, after only a couple of screenings in the United States, of the latest feature film of William Hurt, “The River Why,” based on the novel and bestseller of the same title. It is independent film that involves rising stars and speaks of personal growth through contact with Nature.

Similarly, the festival’s Campana section, targeted towards families and children, has a number of productions that entertain and educate and features the premiere of an animated movie based on a book by Sergio Babarem “El Delfin, la historia de un soñador.”

In total, the festival will host more than 60 premieres among documentaries, short films and feature films. Twenty-five documentaries will compete in the Festival's Official Selection for the “Golden Sun” and its  €20,000 purse. These productions are evaluated by an international jury which includes purchasing officers of large film distributors and television stations. A classic of the festival is National Geographic, which this year is represented in the jury and premieres its latest production, “El Edén del Tuburón.”

FICMA held its first edition in 1993 and since then it has continued each year, becoming the second longest running environmental film festival in the world, only after the festival in Washington, and the oldest of its kind in Europe.
