Grand Farewell Party to the Museum of Natural Sciences

On Saturday, May 15 at 22:30, the Natural Science Museum invites the citizens of Barcelona to the Farewell Party of a facility with 128 years of history that is closing its doors to evolve and adapt to new times. After a large theatrical, musical and fireworks show by the company Artristras, “some inhabitants” of the Castell dels Tres Dragons (the Zoology Building) will begin their journey to the Blue Museum, the museum’s new location at the Forum in Barcelona.

14 may 2010

The show will last one hour and then everyone who wishes may take the opportunity to freely enter this new flagship museum, which, coinciding with the Night of Museums, will be open until one o'clock in the morning.

With this event, the Museum of Natural Sciences starts the countdown of a major renovation and restructuring of its facilities over the next two years. The Blue Museum (the Barcelona Fòrum) will be the new public face of the institution and will house the permanent exhibition Living Planet (Planeta Vida), as well as all temporary exhibitions and outreach activities. The buildings in Ciutadella Park will remain part of the museum but have other functions. El Castell dels Tres Dragons (the Zoology Building) will become the Museum's Research Center while the Martorell Museum (the Geology Building) will host an exhibition of the city’s history of scientific contributions and innovations. With the Botanical Garden and the Botanical Institute, which are part of the museum since 2008, the new Museum of Natural Sciences will have four spaces in three major city parks: the Citadel, Montjuïc and the Forum.

On May 15, the museum celebrates the past and future of an institution that was born over a century years ago thanks to the naturalist Francesc Martorell i Peña, who bequeathed his collection to the city and made possible the first public museum in Barcelona. This was the starting point for a collection that today includes more than two million objects in the field of zoology, geology and botany. The collection of this important heritage has been one of the main tasks of a museum that throughout its life has demonstrated a firm commitment to research and dissemination. Much of this valuable collection will be shown in the Blue Museum.
