"Water, Rivers and People" arrives to Barcelona

"Water, Rivers and People", an international photography exhibition documenting the damage caused to millions of people by obsolete water policies designed without heed of their impact on local populations and the surrounding biosphere will open its doors to the public tomorrow, Tuesday, May 4. The exhibition, organized by Pedro Arrojo, the recipient of the 2003 Goldman Prize and creator of the New Water Culture Foundation, will remain on display at the Barcelona Maritime Museum until May 30, 2010.

3 may 2010

Photographs, audio recordings and texts of more than 25 representative cases from all five continents, together with five more local cases from Catalonia, combine to communicate the experience and various points of view of those affected, profiling a human drama that, despite its extraordinary scale, is still virtually unknown.

The exhibition will aim simultaneously develop a social activist agenda throughout the month of May organized by social movements, unions, associations, educators, artists, experts and institutions associated with the field of water policy, who will come together to discuss in a variety of  formats (lectures, roundtables, conferences, film forums, theater pieces, experiential activities, etc.), the future and conservation strategies for this most precious resource in the 21 century. A series of teaching resources will be available to complement the exhibition for visiting schools and youth groups.

During this month, more than 30 figures and activists will participate in the agenda, including Danielle Mitterand, Federico Mayor Zaragoza, Cristina Narbona, Bishop Luis Infanti (Chilean leader protesting against plans of the power company Endesa), Anne Le Start (Deputy Mayor of Paris,
head for Water, Sanitation and Channel Management), Patrick McCully (environmental activist and director of International Rivers, San Francisco, USA), Emanuele Lobina (leading expert in water and governance, Public Service International Research Unit, UK).

The exhibition has the support of the Generalitat de Catalunya, the Barcelona City Council, the Provincial Government of Barcelona, the Catalan Water Agency and the Maritime Museum of Barcelona, among others. Admission is free.
