Punto y raya festival, the most abstract in the world, at the Arts Santa Mònica

Festival

From 25 to 29 November at the Arts Centre Santa Monica the Second Issue of Punto y Raya Festival will take place. A competition that has earned the title of the most abstract of the world and which explores the creative possibilities of the point and the line in various fields of science, art and thought. No figuration, only points and lines as ends in themselves.

23 November 2009

Punto y Raya Festival began as a project of the Association of Barcelona´s MAD [Moviment D'alliberament Digital] in 2006. The proposal is as simple as universal: "No figuration, only dots and dashes. Are you game? ". This was the challenge issued in its first call (clearly disseminated via the internet) in 2007.

To their surprise, they received nearly 90 specific works from 20 countries. Participants proved to be students from animation schools, devoted animators, film and video art directors, special effects specialists, scientists, architects, composers, Vj's, anthropologists, graphic designers ...

They understood that the universality of the concept had attracted many and varied response in groups; evidently the dot and dash affect the imagination of anyone interested in the creative process.

Under the slogan "back to basics", Punto y Raya restates what is essentially built form and movement and uses these minimal units as ends in themselves. From Beijing to Vancouver, from Reykjavik to Buenos Aires, thousands of people have free attendance to the replenishment of the festival that has been organized through partner groups in each city.

After obtaining this recognition from the experimental audiovisual community and from the specialized critics specialized in just 2 years, Punto y Raya today has established itself as a platform for creation, dissemination and exchange with presence in over 35 cities worldwide. The prestigious Iota Centre in Los Angeles has partnered with the co-ordination of the festival, curated by the Retrospective Section 2009 and managing the tour of the U.S. and Canada.

They have been forced to triple the number of admissions and add 12 countries to those that participated in the first call, having to extend the projection to 6 modules. A total of 4 ½ hours net of animated dots and dashes!).
Admission is free.
