Glances between Science and Art

Chats

Today the chats start at the Palau de la Virreina: Glances between Science and Art, organized by the Cultural Institute of Barcelona. At each of the gatherings, the dialogue between scientists and relevant artists of the national and international scene must show how much they all have sought inspiration or knowledge in art and science, respectively. The intention is to facilitate open dialogue and a fluid relationship between two traditionally opposing camps, as one of the greatest challenges of contemporary culture.

9 November 2009

Art and science are apparently two areas of clearly distinct culture, determined by motivations and objectives that have nothing to do with each other. In the perspective of contemporary developments, the gap between research strategies in science and art is not in any way irreconcilable.

Day by day the conviction that scientific research is not the expression of a unique type and unambiguous of rationality is gaining ground, and that the significance that the imagination, ingenuity and luck have are significant and indeed decisive. On the other hand it’s admitted, increasingly, that artistic creation has a considerable reflective and discursive component, and that instead of opposing science, as one might counter an intuitive function diverging to a linear rationality, it integrates with a field of general thought.

The chats at the Palau de la Virreina: Glances between Science and Art, organised by the Cultural Institute of Barcelona, include three session celebrated during the month of November (10th, 11th and 18th).

The opening of the chats is complemented by an action which is the result of the work and collaboration between artists and Young scientist of different disciplines from Catalonia. Mitosis is a proposal that comes from the Catalan Society of Biology and that enriched the whole reflexions of the various sessions.
