Book

Film and psychoanalysis were almost born in agreement with one another. The nineteenth century was drawing to a close. Whilst in Vienna Sigmund Freud and Josef Breuers were engaged in publishing a study on hysteria, inventors Louis and Auguste Lumière were making history in the darkness of the Salon Indien of the Grand Café in Paris projecting the first scene ever filmed in cinema: workers leaving the Lumière factory in Lyon Monplaisir.

A white book of the mathematical research carried out in Catalonia

Today, Thursday, June 10 at 18:00, the “Llibre blanc matemàtica recerca a Catalunya” (The White Book of Mathematical Research in Catalonia”) will be presented at the Institute of Catalan Studies (IEC; c/ del Carme 47, Barcelona). This white book, commissioned by the IEC, contains comprehensive information on the research carried out at Catalan universities, which, despite being public, is not always easy to find and, so far, had never been compiled into one source.

Towards a simpler future

This designer, digital artist and professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) confesses in his most famous book to date that ever since he was a child he has gone crazy for simple things. A native of Seattle, but of Japanese descent, this 44-year-old researcher has been anointed the guru of simplicity by the digital community.

Comics about HIV/AIDS from around the globe

From May 6 to 9, the Fira de Barcelona will host the 28th edition of the Barcelona International Comic Show. Coinciding with this event, the Documentation Department of SIDA STUDI has prepared a selection of comics on HIV/AIDS published in different countries and languages, all available on loan from the library of the this AIDS awareness association.

First eBooks in Catalan in Catalonia's public libraries

The Department of Culture and Media has introduced a total of 28 e-book reader devices with 249 works in Catalan, Spanish and English in 19 libraries in the Public Reading System of Catalonia and the Library of Catalonia.

Presentation of the collection "Evolve" of the IPHES

The Cerdà Year releases books by the Eixample

To mark the 150th anniversary of the Cerdà Plan, the Office for the Coordination of the Year Cerdà has decided to release in the neighbourhoods of the Eixample 150 books related to the city of Barcelona. The naturalist Cuvier and the philosopher Hegel: a tale of two parallel lives

The mundane nature, ideological dogmatism and a degree of unpopularity are some common points for the biography of the naturalist Cuvier and the philosopher Hegel, as pointed out in the book "The parallel lives of Georges Cuvier and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. Nature and philosophy ", a study carried out by the Professor of the Department of Animal Biology Adrià Casinos, an expert in biomechanics and in studies on evolutionary theories. The book, published recently in the series "Monographs", from the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), focuses on the biographical crosses and spatial and temporal coincidence of the lives of Cuvier and Hegel, two reference figures in the world of science and philosophical thought.

Argus us launched, the new catalogue of Catalan public libraries

The Department of Culture and Media of the Generalitat of Catalonia has launched Argus a tool that provides service to 142 public libraries and unifies 4 pre-existing catalogs. It also increases the number of documents on loan and its term. From the 1 March, the people who use the 142 public libraries in Girona, Lleida, Tarragona and Terres de l'Ebre and six towns of Barcelona, can access the document collections of these libraries via Argus.
