Molecular evolution in humans

The Astronomical Association of Osona will hold the conference “Evolució molecular en humans” (“Molecular Evolution in Humans”) by Josep M. Serrat, of the University of Vic, on Tuesday, June 8.

7 june 2010

The sequencing of the human genome and those of other primates in the first decade of the twenty-first century allows researchers to investigate aspects of human evolution that have puzzled biologists for a long time. Which genes are involved in the evolution of the human race and what do they do? What genes are responsible for the cognitive abilities of humans? What distinguishes humans from chimpanzees from a genetic standpoint? The comparative analysis of human and chimpanzee proteins shows an intriguing similarity. If proteins of these species are so similar, what causes the apparent differences between humans and chimpanzees? In recent years we have obtained the first protein interaction networks of different species, a valuable tool that will answer these questions and possibly bring up new ones.

The conference will be held at the of Astronomical Association of Osona (c/ Pare Xifré, 3, 3º-1ª, Vic) at 20:00 unless expressly stated otherwise.
