Cerdà postmetropolis: The government of metropolitan regions in the XXI century

Between 8 and June 11, the Postmetropolis Cerdà Congress will bring together more than sixty local and international experts on urban planning who will propose their visions of the city from varying disciplines in the course of a workweek. The main issue on the table will be “The government of metropolitan regions in the XXI century.”

4 june 2010

The Congress will take place at the CCCB (Contemporary Culture Center of Barcelona) and will close the Year Cerdà. From June 2009 to June 2010, the city of Barcelona has commemorated the 150th anniversary of the Eixample district with the Year Cerdà, a tribute to the engineer who designed the expansion of the city: Ildefonso Cerdà.

The discussion of the metropolitan city will be raised during the Congress in different formats, with 15 round table discussions and two voting sessions on urban policies that will allow experts and the audience to choose the most appropriate actions for different urban scenarios.

In the words of Francesc Muñoz, director of the Congress: “Beyond the celebration of the anniversary and the homage to the figure of the creator of the Eixample, beyond the review of the urban form and functionality of the Eixample, the Year Cerdà represents an opportunity to refer the matter to a city-wide debate. This debate, although it must start with the very Eixample, valuing both its urban history and relevance at the present time, should be completed away from the boundaries that define the geometry of the grid that makes up the neighborhood, to make visible and put on the agenda of the urban planning of the metropolis upon those areas of Barcelona that are in the greatest need of  Cerdà’s touch.”
