On the occasion of the complete solar eclipse on July 11, 2010, Dr. Miquel Serra-Ricart, of the Canary Islands Astrophysics Institute, organized the expedition Shelios 2010. Between July 6 and 21, the more than 50 members of the expedition visited Santiago de Chile, Isla Negra, Valparaiso, Easter Island – where they witnessed the eclipse – and the Antofagasta region, with its spectacular desert and the Atacama salt flats. Each of these places offers magnificent scenery where the members of the expedition visited three of the most important astronomical observatories in the southern hemisphere. The eclipse and the expedition’s visits to the observatories are the protagonists of this photo gallery.

More about the expedition here.

EASTER ISLAND

Members of the Shelios 2010 expedition stroll on Easter Island (or Rapa Nui, its original Polynesian name) the day before the eclipse. The entirely volcanic Easter Island is the farthest island from any continent.
