In the late 1950s, science slipped into the adventures of superheroes. The quality of scientific teaching in schools in the United States was not what it should be, and the US government, locked in its private war against the USSR, wanted to awaken children’s interest in science via this popular form of entertainment. This theory, explained in detail in
The Physics of Superheroes
by James Kakali, is not at all far fetched according to
Jordi Ojeda
, an industrial engineer and an expert in science and comics books.
THE FLASH
Created by Gardner Fox and Harry Lampert, the main feature of The Flash is his tremendous speed. He is one of the characters where we can best appreciate the principles of physics, says Ojeda. Here, the enemy shoots a layer of ice “that decreases the friction with the ground so that The Flash can not apply his superpower.”
