On the 2nd of November 2009 the
European Spatial Agency
(ESA) launched the SMOS satellite to obtain calibrated images of Earth. Its implementation should contribute to the study of soil moisture and ocean salinity (SMOS), two variables that allow us to understand and improve climate and weather models.
AN EYE IN THE SKY
After four months in orbit, the SMOS has already begun to provide calibrated images. The technicians are still checking some details of the satellite (like the Proteus platform or the Miras), which will be operating in its initial phase until the end of April.
