There are doctors who, outside of their practice, devote their time to scrutinize works of art. Their trained eye was able to diagnose several conditions in some of the most distinguishable pieces of history. Recently the findings of the Italian pathologist Vito Franco have come to light. But he was neither the only one nor the first.

GOITER

The Italian specialist has detected in this piece which Piero Della Francesca painted in 1467 a lump in the neck of the Virgin. The study of this swelling has brought to light that it is goitre, an enlarged thyroid gland.
