Josep Peñuelas i Reixach (Vic, 1958) is Research Professor of Spain’s National Research Council, lecturer at universities and research centers worldwide, author of six books on ecology, more than 600 articles in scientific books and journals (325 of which are included in the Science Citation Index, such as Nature, Science and PNAS), and over 250 popular science articles in the mainstream media. He also works as a freelance journalist, is an experienced hiker and plays soccer.
Educated at the University of Barcelona (UB), he moved on to the UAB "to investigate further."
Peñuelas also collaborates with the Center for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications (CREAF-CSIC) at the UAB and the Center of Advanced Studies of Blanes (CEAB-CSIC).
He has directed 21 doctoral dissertations, 23 masters, and has tutored 22 post-doctoral students. He is a member of the editorial team of the journals Ecology Letters, Remote Sensing of the Environment, New Phytologist, Global Ecology and Biogeography, Plant Ecology and Diversity and e-Forestry. He has been asked to be a project advisor for various international research programs. He is a member of numerous academies and scientific associations on a national and international level. He has received several grants and awards, both national (Conde de Barcelona 1990, the Environment Institute of Catalan Studies-Caja Sabadell 2008 and the Catalan Research Award 2010) and international (from NASA in 1993 and Japan’s Ministry of Science in 1998). He was president of the Catalan Institute of Natural History (ICHN) and director of CADS (Advisory Council for Sustainable Development) of the Generalitat de Catalonia
