Jaume Terradas i Serra was born in Barcelona in 1943. He was one of the founding fathers of environmental science studies in Spain and the UAB was the first Spanish university to offer them as an official degree. Terrades was also the first president of the Spanish Association of Terrestrial Ecology. He received the Narcís Monturiol science and technology medal in 1992, the Environment Award of the Department of Environment of the Generalitat de Catalonia in 1998 and the Institute of Catalan Studies and Fundación Caja Sabadell award in 2002. As a researcher, he is the author of important discoveries in plant ecology and has published, alone or in collaboration, over 150 scientific papers in journals or books on the national or international level and several books, among which are: Ecología, hoy (1971), Ecología y educación ambiental (1979), Ecología de una ciudad: Barcelona (1985), Ecología de la vegetación (2001), Ecología urbana (2001) y Biografía del mundo. Del origen de la vida al colapso ecológico (2005). He has also won the Miquel Martí i Pol poetry award (1996) and the first place Juegos Florales de Barcelona poetry award (1998) as web as published two short novels: El viaje del Omoh (2001) and El grito del conde Arnau (1992).
