Jan-Paul Zock studied environmental science 30 years ago at the Agricultural University of Wageningen in the Netherlands. He specialized in environmental epidemiology and occupational health. In 1999, he began working at the IMIM-Hospital del Mar in Barcelona. He took part in the ECRHS, a European study on asthma which examined 9,000 patients and found that up to 25% of all new cases of asthma in adults are caused by working conditions. He likes to talk about bakers exposed to allergens present in wheat, healthcare workers allergic to latex and derivatives, gardeners allergic to certain pollens, and so forth.

Zock now works in CREAL ( Centre d’Investigació en Epidemiologia Ambiental), where 10 years ago he found that many volunteers who helped clean the beaches of northern Spain after the ecological catastrophe of the Prestige oil spill suffered respiratory symptoms even two years later.

In their study of the relationship between cleaning products and asthma, Zock and his colleagues have interviewed more than 5,000 professionals and 30 companies in the cleaning sector.

Another project he is taking part in is HITEA, a study of the effects of biological contaminants like bacteria and fungi in the school environment. The authors are spending a year looking at different schools of Spain, the Netherlands and Finland, comparing the respiratory morbidity of children with high humidity, temperature and aerobiological factors.
