Vaccinate You seem worried. I am. The vaccines worry me.
Their efficiency? Their security? The bad press.
In the case of the vaccine against the human papillomavirus the encountered difficulties are being sorted out well. The drug agencies and administrations are going ahead with the vaccine plans. But parents having to decide if to vaccine their child or not, are confused. It is about explaining things properly.
Nobody better than you, for doing so. Researchers at this centre and from many others have worked hard and go on doing so to neutralize the deleterious effect of the human papillomavirus, not only about cervical cancer, but about other gynaecological cancers, female as well as male. The papilloma can today be considered the second most predisposing factor to cancer after tobacco; but people still doubt if to vaccine or not. The achieved protection is fundamental.
It should suffice then. Aren't you more worries that the budget measures focused on research are cut? The latest news talks about respecting and not cutting the launched researches. It is very important, as we are in a period of intense activity and a slowdown could have dire consequences. Scientific research is the engine of progress and life quality.
AN APROPRIATE AWARD
Our interviewee lacks no work, but maybe incentives to research. The latest award Bosh achieved from a long list comes from the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI), who in 2009 has awarded "the contributions of this Catalan researcher in the international area of oncology and epidemiology". Endowed with 40,000 Euros, the FCRI award also praises Bosch's work as executive director of the Information Centre about HPV and Cervical Cancer from the OMS-ICO.
