The BOINC initiative uses the computing power of home PCs to fuel research projects in various fields of science on everything from the search for extraterrestrial life to studies on climate change. Worldwide, there are about 350,000 volunteers who share their computing power to this end.

Robots will keep us company by 2020

In ten years, we will witness a turning point in technology: robots will see, act and be able to speak a language naturally. This, at least, is what experts predict. So far, we already have the astronaut robot R2 or the household robot Nao, two gadgets ready to please, evolve and show emotions.

Preventing the coming collapse of cell phone networks

Europe’s mobile wireless networks could collapse within three years’ time due to the increase of users who have smartphones and are connected to the Internet. Two projects funded by the European Commission, one of which is developed by researchers at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, are already working on technology that will prevent this breakdown.

Spanish cities take full advantage of the Shanghai Expo

It may have started on the wrong foot, but little by little, the organizers are fulfilling their promise even though the Shanghai Expo has yet to reach the average of 380,000 visitors a day needed to make the expected total of 70 million visitors over the six-month course of the largest, most expensive, most popular and most visited World Expo ever.
