Preventing the coming collapse of cell phone networks

Europe’s mobile wireless networks could collapse within three years’ time due to the increase of users who have smartphones and are connected to the Internet. Two projects funded by the European Commission, one of which is developed by researchers at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, are already working on technology that will prevent this breakdown.

The solar house of the future

What will the solar homes of the future be like? Self-sufficient in their energy needs, environment friendly and economically more affordable. This characterizes the prototype solar home designed by the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), one of the institutions participating in an international competition of solar houses that begins June 18 in Madrid and will prove to be a true showcase of homes for the future.

The presence of this Nobel-winning physicist in Barcelona on 22 April was on the occasion of a highly-deserved tribute. Equipped with a samovar and a never-empty cup of tea, Pitaevskii paid tribute to his former master in a lecture at the Technical University of Catalonia. His teacher was one of the most influential researchers in modern physics: Lev Landau. For half a century, Landau’s school in Moscow was a cradle of equations, principles and theories that would end up garnering more than one Nobel prize. Here's why.

A new centre to further the nano world

Probe the property of atoms. Identify their properties and reproduce them in a different environment to obtain new results. This is what the daily work is like for 75 researchers who since the end of 2009 work at the new Nano-Engineering Research Centre of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia. Last week the institution officially inaugurated its installations; its challenge is to lead research and the appliance of the nano world.
