Human behaviour seen by computers

Video surveillance, prevention of crimes and accidents. These are, broadly speaking, the possible applications of a new computer vision system, Hermes. This program, developed by a European consortium led by the Computer Vision Centre from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, can take images from afar, at an average proximity and of the face, in order to detect anomalous behaviour and raise an alarm.

Electricity is only a television and its plug, it lacks gas and pipelines, the fridge is a warm cupboard, the living-room and garden are synonyms and comfort is lying on the shade of a tree. The eight members of this family, in the heart of Senegal, eat three times a day: bread, rice and rice. Four of them transit glued to a mobile. Every evening they pray to Mecca, in front of the South American soap opera dubbed into French that is emitted on one of the two channels they receive. And, many villages sponsored by the telephony multinational Orange appear whilst touring the country. Everybody here has a relative outside their borders.
