The first major international study is unable to connect cell phones with brain tumors

While technology enthusiasts have already started the countdown for the new iPhone OS 4.0 and discussing the increase in sales of cell phones with Android in the first quarter of the year in the U.S., the results of the first major international study on the relationship between cell phones and brain tumors have just been published. Much to the scientists’ surprise, the findings are inconclusive, and more research needs to be done.

Brain damage in cancer treatment

The treatments of chemotherapy and radiotherapy can affect the brain and impair cognitive functions. Although we need more evidence regarding the scope of this harmful effect, there are already studies that observe this association. Understanding the mechanisms by which it occurs and whether the neuroprotection may be effective for preventing it are two important research fronts that are open from now.

Viruses star in the World Cancer Day

50% of cancer patients do not survive in Europe after five years, experts warn. This is the reality coming through their surgeries, despite the advances that have turned this 'long illness' into one of the most researched one worldwide since the 80s. Although genetics plays a role, it seems that 80% of tumours feed of environmental factors and nearly 20% respond to viral infections caused by bacteria.
