Traditional searches miss 90% of distant galaxies

The scientific community has known for some time that most surveys of distant regions of the universe fail to find many galaxies. The National Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) has participated in a study which places the number of missing galaxies at 90% of the total.

Simulated galaxies resemble real ones

Using millions of hours on supercomputers, researchers from the University of Washington have run simulations of galaxy formation and produced dwarf galaxies very much like those observed today by satellites and large telescopes around the world. The research has been published in 'Nature'.

Reinvigorated Hubble Space Telescope Reveals Most Distant Galaxies Yet

Using the recently updated Hubble Space Telescope (HST) two teams of UK astronomers have identified galaxies which are likely to be the most distant yet seen. The UK teams, from University of Oxford and University of Edinburgh, analyzed infrared images from the new Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) instrument on HST, installed during the most recent Space Shuttle servicing mission in May 2009.
