Wind power takes Spain by storm

For the first time in Spain’s history, wind power was the country’s leading source of electricity in the month of March. Wind power provided 21% of Spain’s total electricity, equaling a savings of 1.7 million tons of CO2 emissions. Spain stands out for its global commitment to this alternative energy source along with solar power

The end of the last ice age rapidly increased atmospheric CO2

A study published in Nature, which involved a UAB researcher, described for the first time how the thawing of the last ice age and changes in ocean currents released large quantities of CO2 stored in the deep ocean into the atmosphere, thereby accelerating global warming by the greenhouse effect and the end of the ice age. The discovery, researchers say, will be key to predicting climate changes in the future.

Researchers create a new generation of calcium-based materials

Researchers at the Materials Science Institute of Madrid (ICMM-CSIC) have developed a new material based on calcium that might prove to be a cheaper and cleaner alternative to some of the existing industrial catalysts.

New method to measure the absorption capacity of carbon by the oceans

The ocean captures and stores much of the carbon dioxide generated by human activity, and thus mitigates the effects of climate change. However, the storage capacity of the ocean is not unlimited and, until now it was not possible to estimate it accurately. An international group involving the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) has developed an observation network that uses commercial ships that participate voluntarily. With them one can specify the quantity of C02 absorbed by the ocean and identify key regions that act as carbon sinks.
