Deciphered for the first time the human metagenome

Researchers at the Research Institute of the Hospital Vall d'Hebron in Barcelona (HUVH-IR) in conjunction with the Centre for Biomedical Research of the Network of Hepatic and Digestive Diseases (CIBERehd) participated as the only representative of Spain, in the project MetaHIT. Their first results are published today in the journal Nature. The researchers describe a catalogue of 3,300,000 genes from the intestinal bacteria. This translates into approximately 20,000 different functions in charge of all the bacteria that live in our intestines.

EU research identifies gene linked with irregular heartbeat

A partially EU-funded team of researchers has identified the location of a gene that may have an important influence on the risk of atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat). The study, published in 'Nature Genetics' could lead to the development of new and more specific drugs for the treatment of atrial fibrillation.

New type of genetic variation could strengthen natural selection

The unexpected discovery of a new type of genetic variation suggests that natural selection, the force that drives evolution, is both more powerful and more complex than scientists have thought. The study, carried out by researchers from Vanderbilt University (Tennessee, United States), has been published in ‘Nature’. This finding may help explain how some organisms, including bacterial pathogens, maintain high levels of diversity and adapt rapidly to new stresses.
