New genetic risk factors for heart disease

Heart infarction and angina pectoris (CHD) are very common. A study of more than 147,000 people has found thirteen new genetic factors that increase the risk for these problems. The study, published in Nature Genetics, is the result of an international study including the Hospital del Mar Research Institute in Barcelona.

Researchers at Respiratory Disease Center (CIBERES) of the Hospital del Mar-IMIM and the Hospital Clínic-IDIBAPS of Barcelona discovered that chronic exposure to cigarette smoke is linked to the oxidation of muscle proteins.
