The oldest rat in history unearthed at Atapuerca

The oldest water rat in history has been found at the Sima del Elefante dig, part of Atapuerca in northern Spain, an archaeological site rich in fossils where the remains of the first Europeans were discovered. A Neanderthal barbeque

The Catalan Institute of Human Paleontology and Social Evolution (IPHES) found the remains of a bonfire along with deer bones dating back some 50,000 years ago while excavating the Teixoneres cave near Moià, in Spain’s northwestern Catalonia region. Scientists hope the find will shed light on such questions as how big the group of Neanderthals was, what food they ate and how they prepared it.
